NNA June Newsletter

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Last month was so busy that we had to take a month off from newsletter-writing to fit everything in, but we're back and have lots to report! This includes a very important upcoming vote (see more below) that could have a big impact on our organization. So enough with the introduction - just keep scrolling to find out about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA is up to!

General Meeting Wednesday

Our monthly General Meeting at the Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments will take place tomorrow (Wednesday).  This is the perfect first step to getting more involved in the community!  Come hear what's going on in the neighborhood, meet some neighbors, and bring any questions or concerns you might have.

NNA General Meeting
Date: Wednesday, June 22
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments (16th and Reed)

IMPORTANT: Proposed Name Change to Our Organization

We're proud of our neighborhood, especially its rich history and diversity, which is why the NNA board has agreed to hold a vote at our monthly general meeting in July on whether we should change our name. We know that the name "Newbold" comes with a lot of mixed feelings, which is why we think it's worth considering a new name that ensures our  non-profit sincerely and purposefully represents all of our neighbors, new and old.

We are announcing the vote today, which will be held on Wednesday, July 27th at our regular general meeting (6:30pm at Reed Street Apartments). If we vote to retain the name, then that's the end of the issue for now. However if we vote to change the name, then we will start asking for proposals for a new name, and the most popular suggestions will be held for a vote at our August general meeting.

Do you have strong feelings about this issue? Then please come out and voice them, we want to hear your take! We truly want to ensure this process is as transparent and  open as possible, so please reach out with any questions to president@newboldneighbors.org.

Picnic at Manton Green

On Saturday, June 11, the Clean and Green committee hosted a clean up and neighborhood picnic at Manton Green. Thank you so much to all the neighbors who helped make the event a success! It was great to see so many of you. If you haven't already, check out the new planters and vegetable garden at the Green (17th and Manton). It's looking spectacular!

Wanted: Clean & Green Committee Members!

Mark your calendars for the next committee meeting on Thursday, July 14th at 6:30 PM (location TBD). We will be discussing upcoming events, such as the Philadelphia Water Department's Rain Check program workshop we are looking to plan for the end of August. Please email clean@newboldneighbors.org from more info. Hope to see you there!

17th District Annual Block Party

The 17th District of the Philadelphia police are throwing their annual block party on June 25th from 10am to 6pm.

They'll have tons of kid friendly activities, food and members of the PA Army National Guard's 103rd Engineer Battalion will be showing kids a military vehicle and equipment.

Email Charlie Elison  if your organization is interested in setting up a table or if you'd like to help a few neighbors run children's activities.

Notes from Public Safety

Public Safety reminds you that you can always join us at the PSA Meetings, Captain's Meetings, Neighborhood Walk or feel free to email us with questions and concerns. We'd love to see you there. Check the NNA calendar for more details and keep up with all the great things our committees are doing.

Here are the month's crime numbers:

A little prevention goes a long way. Lock your doors and windows and remember to remove valuables from your car. Be aware when using your cell phone as you walk, especially at night. Making sure your outdoor lights are operational and turned on as the sun sets helps a would-be criminal think twice and consider moving-on to less visible targets.

Lastly, If you would like to meet the local officers and leaders of the PSAs, please stop by 1200 Block of Point Breeze Avenue on Saturday June 25th, 10am to 6pm where the 17th District will be holding a meet and greet.

Have a great month and stay safe.

As always, check the calendar on our website for any NNA meetings and events as well as non-NNA events that are of interest to our neighborhood. If you have any events that you would like us to consider adding to the calendar, please feel free to e-mail us the information.

April Newsletter

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Spring has officially arrived, and our neighborhood has positively been abuzz with activity!  The trees are blooming, people are dusting off their grills, and all of the sudden it seems like a good idea to just go sit on the stoop and take it all in.  What a good time to live in this little corner of South Philly!

In addition, NNA has been making huge strides for the improvement of our community: the Citywide Spring Cleanup was a veritable success, our Zoning team is helping neighbors guide more and more proposed development, and many neighbors found a postcard in their mailboxes recently, kindly inviting them to join us and help in our efforts!

Below, find more about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA has been up to...

Yesterday's General Meeting

Last night, we had one of the best, most diverse and active turn outs for our General Meeting EVER (nearly 30 people)! We even had two candidates for Common Pleas Judge seek us out to speak to attendees during New Business, we had a representative from the Committee of Seventy impart the importance of voting in this year's elections, and we had Committee report-outs that were positively PACKED with activities and updates about YOUR neighborhood. So while the world turns with grief, hope springs eternal in our little corner of Philadelphia.

Clean and Green

On Saturday, April 11, the neighborhood was hard at work as neighbors came together to sweep, clean, and spruce up their blocks. The Clean and Green Committee helped to sign up projects and provide supplies to many of the blocks that registered for the annual Citywide Spring Clean Up. The day was a huge success, with over 20 blocks registered and numerous community members pitching in to help make our neighborhood more beautiful.

Spring will continue to be a busy time for Clean and Green! Interested in helping us plant flowers or trees? Looking to have a tree planted in front of your home this November? Have an idea for a project that will help beautify the neighborhood? Email clean@newboldneighbors.org or, better yet, come out to our next meeting! We'll be at Benna's West (1444 S. Broad) at 6:30 PM on Thursday, May 14. Hope to see you there!

Public Safety

The Public Safety Committee has released the NNA Quarterly Crime Report, which you can find here. The report includes statistics that put crime into perspective by comparing trends over time and mapping all crimes that have occurred within our service area so far this year.  It's got tons of data, information, and graphics (like the one below), all designed to keep you informed.

For more information about the data, to request specific information, or to find out about the next Public Safety meeting, please contact Miguel Garces and Eddie Thrasher at publicsafety@newboldneighbors.org.

Education

The Education Committee is continuing to push forward and forge relationships with the schools in our areas, such as EM Stanton, GW Childs Elementary, and their affiliated organizations.  Want to get involved and support our local public schools?  Email our committee chairperson for the location of the next meeting on 5/20 @ 6PM: education@newboldneighbors.org

Planning & Zoning

Do you have opinions about what gets built or not built in our neighborhood?  Of course you do!  Come get your voice heard at our next Planning & Zoning meeting.  This committee is a leading voice for the changing landscape of our community and they want your involvement!

For more info, email our committee chairpersons:
zoning@newboldneighbors.org

Or just join us at our next meeting:  Tuesday 5/12, 6:30 PM @ Reed St. Presbyterian Apartments

Community Outreach

The outreach committee is starting to plan its annual Wine & Sangria Tour.  (Save the date - July 25th!)  If you would like to be a part of the planning committee or a host for the tour, please email MarilysMazzara@Newboldneighbors.org

Also, NNA is excited to be partnering with the Philadelphia Film Society to host a "Movies on the Block" event.  YOU help pick the subject, THEY pick the title, and then we convene as neighbors to watch a film about things that matter to this neighborhood that we love. Help us by clicking here and voting below on a subject!

Interested in strengthening relationships in the community?  Join the Community Outreach Committee for their next meeting Thursday 4/16 @ 7:30.  Email outreach@newboldneighbors.orgfor more info.
