New Clean & Green Chairs Are Busy!

New Clean & Green Chairs, Amanda Bauman and Sarah Stevenson have been busy, busy, busy since taking the reins in February. Here's just some of what they and the committee have been up to:

  • They teamed up to visit groups of neighbors participating in the Citywide Cleanup, offering donuts and coffee and spreading the word about EPBN's programs.
  • They made circular-Free Philly registration forms available and over 30 applications were mailed in on neighbors' behalf.
  • They partnered with the Travis Manion Foundation and students from St. Joe's Prep to plant street trees all over the neighborhood.

Great job, Amanda and Sarah! If you'd like to help them with their cleaning and greening efforts, get in touch with them and clean@epbneighbors.org.

ISO: More EPBN Board Members!

Although we're thrilled that we have lots of great, new board members as a result of our February elections, we still have some vacant seats available for anyone looking to get involved:

  • Secretary
    • Writes the monthly newsletter
    • Records minutes at meetings
  • Technology
    • Performs duties of webmaster
    • Maintains social media
  • Public Safety
    • Leads neighborhood walks
    • Attends PSA meetings
So, anyone out there in the neighborhood who might think they'd be interested in any of the following positions, don't hesitate to get in touch with our president, Miguel, at president@epbneighbors.org!

As always, check the calendar on our website for all EPBN meetings and events as well as events that are of interest to our neighborhood. If you have any events that you would like us to consider adding to the calendar, please feel free to email us.

Welcoming Week Speakers

Welcoming Week is a series of events put on by the Office of Immigrant Affairs that highlights that Philadelphia is an open, friendly, and hospitable environment for immigrants and people of all backgrounds. The activities and events provide U.S.-born and foreign-born residents an opportunity to explore other cultures — and develop a deeper appreciation for one another.

East Point Breeze Neighbors is excited to be a part of it this year! At our general meetingtomorrow (details above), we'll hear from Hani White from the City’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, representatives from SEAMAAC, and Jessica Hinchey from the Nationalities Service Center. We'll learn about South Philadelphia’s immigrant communities and how local civic organizations and neighbors can be a part of providing a welcoming community to new arrivals.

General Meeting Tuesday

Our monthly General Meeting at the Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments will take place tonight (Tuesday).  This is the perfect first step to getting more involved in the community!  Come hear what's going on in the neighborhood, meet some neighbors, and bring any questions or concerns you might have.

NNA General Meeting
Date: Tuesday, March 22
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments (16th and Reed)

Meet Our New President!

At our general meeting last month, Miguel Garces was elected as NNA's new president for the next two years. Miguel has lived on the 1600 Block of Manton for three years and loves living in South Philly. He was born and raised in New Jersey and arrived in Philadelphia in 2005 to study Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Since graduating, he has continued in the political science field, working for a small defense contractor in Ardmore, PA. Miguel is married to his high school sweetheart Aimee Garces, who is a store manager at Burlington Coat Factory in Upper Darby.

Miguel is excited to take the helm of NNA as its incoming president. His main priorities for the next two years of his term are to improve board governance, increase voting membership, and develop a more diverse organization by working with our Outreach Committee to reach out to all communities in our neighborhood. He hopes to help guide our committees to continue doing the great work they do, which includes encouraging smart development via the Zoning Committee, planting more street trees on bare blocks via the Clean & Green Committee, and strengthening existing community policing strategies with our Public Safety Committee.

To contact Miguel, please email him at miguelgarces@newboldneighbors.org.

And a Big Welcome to Other New Board Members! Welcome to the team, guys! We're excited to start working with you and are sure that you'll be great assets to our neighborhood!

NNA June Newsletter

Please see our June newsletter below. Some of the information is outdated, but keep posted for our July newsletter coming soon!

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day! Did you know the summer solstice also occurred on Sunday to mark the official start to summer? While the pools are scheduled to open soon and lots of other cool stuff continues to happen, we all know that summer in Philly can kinda be a bit uneventful as people take off for the shore or other destinations. So, how do you beat the summer doldrums? Why not get involved with NNA and work for the betterment of the neighborhood? (Or at least come drink some wine and see some houses on our Wine & Sangria tour with us!)

Either way, keep scrolling for more about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA has been up to...

Cleaning and Greening

Our "meeting" this month was really just an excuse to say goodbye to longtime NNA member and former Clean & Green co-chair, Jesse Leonard.  If you don't know or haven't worked with Jesse, she's been instrumental in advancing the goals of NNA and the beautification of our community.  She's leaving some BIG shoes for us to fill!  (Good luck in NYC, Jesse!  Come back soon!)

However, here are some happenings and opportunities that may be of interest:

  • PHS Garden Trainings are FREE to anyone in Councilman Johnson's district. Call or email Peter at Peter.Elliot@Phila.gov or 215-686-3412 for a Council Sponsor coupon.
  • The PHS Pop Up Garden at 9th and Wharton is looking for volunteers. Anyone interested should check out www.pennhort.net/pop-up-volunteer.
  • The next district-wide clean up event sponsored by the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee will be Saturday August 1st. Please contact us for more information on how to participate.

If you're interested in getting involved please email clean@newboldneighbors.org.  Ournext meeting will be July 9th at 6:30.
