EPBN 2017 Election Results

Elections for the board of East Point Breeze Neighbors occurred at our general meeting last Wednesday, and here are the results. Congratulations to our new board members! And thank you to our dedicated outgoing board members, Paul Knese, Jackie Nidoh, Abby Fenton, Dylan Fenton, Anne Lynn, and Eddie Thrasher. We are still looking to fill the secretary and public safety co-chair positions. Please let miguelgarces@epbneighbors.org know if you're interested in any of the positions!

  • Vice President: Supports the president and assumes the presidency should the president resign.
    • Jerry Sulat
Jerry has been a resident of Point Breeze since March of 2015 and is excited to become a part of the EPBN Board. He had a forty-year career in public service with the Social Security Administration and is recently retired. He is a graduate of  King’s College with a BA in Government and Politics. Before working for the Social Security Administration, he was a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia. In addition, he was the President of the Philadelphia Area of Social Security Management Association from 2009 to 2013.
  • Treasurer: Responsible for the accounting needs of the organization.
    • Libby Peters
Libby Peters is originally from upstate New York, but moved to Philadelphia shortly after college to row for Vesper Boat Club and the US National Team. Over the last ten years, Philadelphia has become her home. She has been involved in various community-based programs, mostly centering around youth. She has volunteered for the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, worked for the Urban Nutrition Initiative, and founded and ran a nonprofit called Philadelphia City Rowing which provides public school students with afterschool programming centered around a competitive rowing program.

Libby attended Columbia University for her undergraduate degree where she studied History and Middle Eastern Studies, volunteered extensively with youth in Harlem and Queens, and did a lot of rowing. While in Philadelphia, Libby earned a certificate in Business Essentials at the Wharton School of Business, and is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Administration at Penn’s Fels Institute of Government. Libby is a rowing coach at the University of Pennsylvania and currently resides in Point Breeze with her wife Sarah, dog Hudson, and cat Trey. She was appointed to the Mayor’s Commission on LGBT Affairs in February 2017 and looks forward to serving the East Point Breeze Neighborhood Association as treasurer.
  • Clean & Green Co-chairs: focused on providing the residents of the neighborhood with connections to city resources to help make your blocks cleaner and greener by planning block cleanups and planting trees.
    • Amanda Bauman
As part of the East Point Breeze Neighbors Clean and Green committee, Amanda has enjoyed numerous tree plantings and cleanup events, and is eager to become more involved in this integral aspect of the community.  For the last sixteen years, she has been employed as a Tour Manager with ACFEA Tour Consultants, planning intensive concert tours for amateur performing arts groups from the US to countries as far reaching as India, South Africa and Vietnam.  Having majored in voice at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh (BA Music 1997), she is still an active singer, and a member of the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia.  She and her husband, Maurice, live in Point Breeze with their baby daughter Libby, who is herself a regular face at community meetings and functions.
    • Sarah Stevenson
Sarah Stevenson is the Director of Government Affairs & Policy for the Philadelphia Water Department. Prior to joining PWD, Sarah served for five years in the City of Philadelphia Law Department, representing the Water and Streets Departments. Sarah received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her JD/MPA from Villanova. Prior to joining the City, Sarah was Assistant Policy Director for the government watchdog Committee of Seventy where she focused on municipal policy and election law. She is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and New York.

Sarah has lived in several corners of Philadelphia – including Fairmount (where she was born), Spruce Hill, Graduate Hospital, and now Point Breeze – and takes tremendous pride in our great City. She serves on the steering committee of PennGALA (the school's LGBT alumni association) and previously served on the boards of the Philadelphia Falcons Soccer Club and the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee. Sarah and her wife Libby are active members of Christ Church in Old City. Her favorite pastime is going on long walks around the City. One of her best memories is walking down Broad Street with her brothers to watch game 4 of the 2008 World Series and walking back up after the win.
  • Outreach Co-chair: updates content on the website, organizes business outreach, and collects block captain information. The committee also coordinates with other civic associations, community groups, and institutions.
    • Jonathan Edwards
As an advocate for conscious community building, Jonathan's commitment is to support people in positive ways. For the past six years, he has coordinated after school programs for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He wants to help create growth for his students and for the community he calls home. Living in the Point Breeze neighborhood for five years is a remarkable experience. The history of this community and neighbors living here are truly admirable. Although he is originally from the New York tri-state area, Point Breeze is where he now calls home. For Jonathan, having the ability to support community outreach is a small exchange for the ability to live in this great neighborhood.
  • Zoning Co-chair: facilitates monthly public zoning meetings in which applicants seeking zoning variances are able to present their plans, gather valuable public feedback, and gauge community support for their project before going in front of the city.
    • Lauren Tabas
Lauren Tabas has been a resident of the East Point Breeze neighborhood since 2009.  She joined the Zoning Committee in 2015 after she bought her home in December 2014.  She’s a Senior Associate in the Philadelphia Office of Phelan Hallinan Diamond & Jones, LLP where she specializes in title and real estate litigation and creditor’s rights.  Lauren was born and raised in Bucks County before attending Union College in Schenectady, New York and graduating from Florida State University College of Law in 2004.  Lauren lives in the neighborhood with her husband, Brendan.
